Grites
Okay. So I’m still having some trouble filling the hole left by Timely Reinforcements in my deck. I lose life a lot quicker thanks to shocklands, and I don’t have any powerful lifegain. I also don’t want to splash green at this point.
But I’ve come up with a possible solution?
I think I’m going to cut the crypt ghasts to about 2, and then add 2 Firemane Avengers.
I almost always have at least two spirit tokens on the field to attack with. This card could be handy I think?

Whenever I play with my control deck…
This is how I feel when I play grites TBH. Looking at people messing with my board state without batting and eyelid cause lol. Hardest decisions I have to make are: Which answers do I use first….

This is how a game saved my life
A couple years ago I suffered from extreme social…
This is so beautiful. Magic the Gathering is a really big deal to me too, and I guess I wish I could say the same about my experience :[ It’s so cool that it’s done so much for you.
When I got into magic though, I was actually at a point where I was starting to work through and move past some of the obsessive fears that kept me from living my life. And MTG both… helps and hinders that.
On one hand sometimes it makes me feel really awesome, connected to a bigger community, and part of something really cool. It helps me exercise my creativity as well at my reasoning skills. I enjoy the challenge of playing the game very much. And I’ve met some really cool people through it.
However, it also triggers my anxiety a lot, and sends be back to the quivering, quiet, reserved, fearful, escape artist I was years ago.
And It happens because I get talked down to and patronized. A lot. By other players, by store employees, in discussion forums, even by magic pros writing articles on the internet. They make me feel stupid, ridicule me for mistakes, and dismiss my opinions regularly.
I never really had an open and welcoming, helpful community to join or a friendly environment to learn it. My LGS is full of elitest condescending assholes. And I want to go out and play this game competitively but that’s a really huge stumbling block. Everyone walks around with their egos hanging out of their pants, anxious for the opportunity to talk down to a less experienced player.
And you know what? I have to change the way I act to adapt to that situation in order to survive. I have to get tough and behave in a way I normally wouldn’t because I want these guys to respect me, and I have to assert myself more to do that. And I don’t like it, I don’t want to have to do it. But I do because I’m so sick of being seen as the happy-go-lucky, enthusiastic newbie. So I put on the same shitty act that they do and I catch myself doing it and I hate it. I don’t want to talk down to other people. I don’t want to act like I’m hot shit. I just want to make friends and talk about cards and not give two shits if they’re competitive or not and have to preface everything I say with my knowledge of the game so that I don’t get written off or sneered at.
Because seriously. Breaking into this community is HARD. People aren’t friendly. Not here.

I will let you know how it plays when I grab the cards I need and start playing it!! I’m going to the card shop this weekend, and I might stick around to play with some people there. Maybe. I think they do standard on saturdays….

I’m actually so excited
I realized that instead of building an entirely new balck deck, I’m just going to update my Grites Deck with some of the new tech, because there actually are replacements for some of the spells I’m losing to rotation!!
For anyone not familiar with my Grites Deck (That I adore in every way, it’s wonderful, and It took me a long time to learn how to play, but I wish I could play it forever), here’s the list:
Old Craterhoof Grites
Reanimation package
- 3x Griselbrand
- 3x Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
- 3x Craterhoof Behemoth
- 4x Unburial Rites
- 4x Faithless Looting
- 3x Wild Guess
Control and damage mitigation

- 2x Timely Reinforcements
- 2x Oblivion Ring
- 4x Lingering Souls
- 3x Pillar of Flame
lands
- 4x Blackcleave Cliffs
- 3x Isolated Chapel
- 3x Dragonskull Summit
- 3x Clifftop Retreat
- 4x Plains
- 4x Swamp
- 3x Mountain
So yeah. As you can see, quite a few of those spells, I lost to rotation (and haven’t updated since). here they are, and what I’m swapping in in their place:
- 3x Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
- 3x Zombie Infestation
- 2x Day of Judgment
- 2x Timely Reinforcements
- 4x Blackcleave Cliffs
turns into:
- 4x Crypt Ghast (life gain, mana ramp. replaces elesh norn and helps mitigates loss of timely reinforcements. Might change to thragtusk.)
- 3x Liliana of the Veil (A discard outlet to make up for the loss of zombie infestation, plus other abilities)
- 2x Mutilate (replaces day of judgement)
- 1x Rakdos’ Return (because it’s good)
- (and the mana base is getting a complete overhaul thanks to shocklands!)
But I’m not happy with just those changes. There’s a couple more things I want to improve. Like the wild guesses I mentioned before and some other things. So a few more fiddles later…..
I have a starting point to begin testing!! Wooohooo!!!

Maybe it’s worth splashing in the green to support the craterhoof behemoth (I mean what happens when my unburial rights gets slaughter gamesed huh? no way to cast it. I can get away with it in my casual friend group but somehow I doubt competitive players aren’t going to mess me up haha) and then finding room for thragtusk.
Hmmmm.
Anyway just wanted to post it because it’s what I’ve been thinking about all evening.
